A “Monster” Suction Pile is currently being fabricated at InterMoor’s Morgan City, LA facility. At 32 feet diameter and 50 feet long, this ALM pile will weigh over 200 tonnes and will be one of the largest ever installed in the Gulf of Mexico.
How big is that? If the rendering above, comparing the pile to a human, still does not help you realize how big it really is, here is what the Project Manager had to say about its size:
- “You can play half court basketball on the top plate”
- “That first can is twice as big as my swimming pool in area and four times as big in volume”
This first can is only the first of five, each 10ft high, that will be stacked on top of each other to form the final pile. The drawing below illustrates can stacking:
